Case Study

The Carolina Crash was founded in 1995 with a simple but profound belief: that every person, regardless of physical ability, deserves the chance to return to movement, community, and joy. Born from the vision of the Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (ASAP), the team quickly became more than just a sports team; it became a lifeline for patients searching for identity, strength, and purpose after life-altering injuries. With a story this powerful, their games deserved to be seen and followed properly, but for a long time, there was no way for parents, friends, and supporters to watch or stay connected.

Born from the vision of the Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (ASAP), the Crash began as more than a team; it became a lifeline for patients searching for identity, strength, and purpose after life‑altering injuries.

For many athletes, the journey begins in rehabilitation, where they are introduced to the sport, fitted into rugby chairs, and welcomed into a supportive environment that helps them rebuild confidence, rediscover belonging, and experience the intensity and joy of competition.

In 2007, the Carolina Crash became its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation, while remaining deeply connected to ASAP, which continues to provide funding and dedicated recreational therapy staff. This partnership ensures athletes have the resources, equipment, and guidance needed to train and compete at a high level. Entirely volunteer-run, the team is powered by coaches, therapists, alumni players, and a passionate community who believe in the transformative power of adaptive sport.

Today, the Carolina Crash has 11 USWRA (United States Wheelchair Rugby Association) – registered athletes, a number that represents more than growth; it represents resilience and momentum.

Over the past three years, the team has flourished, returning to the USWRA Nationals for the first time in more than a decade.

Wheelchair Rugby Team Live Streaming Challenges

Despite the team’s impact and progress, their games were difficult to follow for anyone not physically present. Without live streaming, supporters who couldn’t travel had no way to stay connected.

Even when games were streamed, there was no scoreboard; viewers had to rely on commentary to understand the score. If someone joined halfway through, it was almost impossible to know what was happening, which created a disconnected and frustrating viewing experience.

How OBScoreboard Improved Their Broadcast

By introducing OBScoreboard into their broadcasts, the Carolina Crash transformed how their wheelchair rugby games were experienced. A clear, real-time scoreboard meant viewers could instantly understand the state of the game, follow along with ease, and stay engaged from start to finish.

One key advantage was using a basketball-style scoreboard overlay, with features like shot clocks and quarter tracking that closely matched the flow of wheelchair rugby. This allowed the team to use a familiar and structured format without needing a custom-built solution, making setup faster and more intuitive.

Simple, Reliable Streaming Setup

The Carolina Crash kept their setup lean and practical: an iPhone on a tripod for video, connected to a MacBook running OBS to stream directly to YouTube. They used OBScoreboard to add live overlays to the broadcast, while a microphone plugged into the laptop allowed commentators to provide live commentary, creating a professional, easy-to-follow stream without complex equipment.

Results: More Professional and Engaging Live Streams

The stream now looks professional. Viewers can see the score, the clock, and the period at a glance, which makes a real difference for people who are new to the sport. When you can follow what’s happening, you stick around.

Sponsors now have a consistent on-screen presence, which strengthens the case for future partnerships and supports the team’s fundraising conversations. And the overall quality of the production now reflects what the team has built over thirty years.

Possibly more importantly, it didn’t require hiring anyone new or buying any new equipment. Volunteers are running it. For a nonprofit, that matters.

Why Scoreboard Overlays Matter for Sports Streaming

Scoreboard overlays are a key part of any professional sports live stream. They display real-time scores, timers, team names, and match information directly on screen, helping viewers follow the game without confusion.

For clubs, teams, and production companies streaming with tools like OBS, vMix, or Streamlabs, a scoreboard overlay instantly makes a broadcast look more professional and easier to watch. It improves viewer experience, keeps audiences engaged, and makes streams more appealing to sponsors.

Wheelchair rugby is fast, physical and strategic. The athletes train hard and compete at a high level. When a newly injured player first rolls onto the Crash’s court, they’re stepping into something built on resilience and belief.

The livestream should reflect that, for families watching from across the country, for supporters, and for the next person at home wondering if there’s still a way forward.

OBScoreboard didn’t change what the Carolina Crash is. It made sure their story, their performance, and their matches were presented clearly through a professional live stream with a reliable scoreboard overlay.
